What is the Web Model Context Protocol (WebMCP)?

WebMCP is an emerging browser standard, developed by engineers at Google and Microsoft and currently in early preview in Chrome, that lets a website tell an AI agent exactly what it can do on that page: search, filter, fill out a form, add an item to a cart, etc. A site registers these actions as structured "tools," and any AI agent visiting that page can use them. Because it runs entirely in the browser tab, WebMCP tools only exist while that page is open, so there's no separate backend server involved.
How is WebMCP different from MCP?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a broader, server-side standard for connecting AI agents to backend tools and data, and it works whether or not a browser is involved. WebMCP applies the same underlying idea specifically to the client-side browser. The two are meant to work together. A business might run an MCP server for backend automation while using WebMCP to help a customer actively browsing its site.
How is WebMCP different from ACP and UCP?
The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is focused on e-commerce specifically, as it handles the order, payment, and confirmation between a shopper's agent and a merchant's backend, mainly inside ChatGPT. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is also commerce-specific, supporting the entire shopping journey across multiple platforms. Neither is tied to a single browser tab.
WebMCP isn't commerce-specific at all. It's a general way for any site to expose any action to an in-browser agent, and today it only works in Chrome.
What's the impact on e-commerce?
WebMCP is still experimental and in early preview in Google Chrome only, so its practical impact on e-commerce today is limited. If adopted widely, it will move e-commerce toward AI agents interacting directly with a merchant's own site rather than relying solely on a third-party platform integration.
