What is Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard Google introduced in January 2026 that lets AI agents shop on a customer's behalf, including discovering products, building a cart, checking out, and handling things like tracking or returns afterward. Google co-developed it with Shopify and a wide coalition of retail and payments companies, and it currently powers direct buying inside Google AI Mode and the Gemini app.

To use it, businesses publish their e-commerce capabilities on their own sites by configuring their server. This may include things like accepting an order, applying a discount, processing a return, etc., any compatible AI agent can discover and use those capabilities on its own. The retailer stays the merchant of record throughout the process, meaning they keep the customer relationship, the data, and control over fulfillment.

How is UCP different from ACP or WebMCP?

The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), OpenAI's protocol, is scoped mainly to complete checkout inside ChatGPT, and merchants need OpenAI's approval to participate. UCP is intended to manage the full commerce lifecycle — discovery through post-purchase — and lets a business publish its own capabilities rather than going through a single approval process.

The Web Model Context Protocol (WebMCP) is a browser-based standard, still in early preview, that lets any website allow AI agents visiting the page to take specific actions, like filling out a form. It's general-purpose and lives entirely in the browser tab.

What is UCP’s impact on e-commerce?

If your product data isn't structured the way UCP expects, your products may be invisible to the AI agents shopping on your customers' behalf, even when they're a perfect match for what the shopper is asking. Brands that get their catalogs UCP-ready early are positioned to capture high-intent traffic directly inside Google's AI surfaces, before checkout has fully shifted there.

What should my brand do about UCP?

Start by checking whether your product feed has the depth of information that UCP-compliant discovery requires, and whether you meet the requirements for Google's early access program through their Merchant Center. Feed requirements are still evolving, which is why brands will want to automate this process instead of managing it SKU by SKU.
