What is OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)?

The Agentic Commerce Protocol is an open standard that OpenAI built with Stripe to let ChatGPT complete purchases on a shopper's behalf. It's the technology behind Instant Checkout, which first let US ChatGPT users buy directly from Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants and others rolling in over time.

When a shopper decides to buy a product recommended in a chat, ChatGPT sends the order details to the merchant's backend using the ACP spec. The merchant accepts or declines the order and processes payment through their own provider, like Stripe. The retailer stays the merchant of record, handling fulfillment and support exactly as they would for any other order.

How is ACP different from UCP and WebMCP?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Google's protocol, covers the full shopping journey from product discovery to checkout and post-purchase operations, and lets merchants publish their own e-commerce capabilities rather than applying for approval. ACP is scoped more tightly to the checkout and payment handoff inside ChatGPT, and merchants currently need to apply and be approved by OpenAI.

The Web Model Context Protocol (WebMCP) is a browser-based standard, still in early preview, that lets any website allow AI agents visiting the page to take specific actions, like filling out a form. It's general purpose and lives entirely in the browser tab.

What's the impact on e-commerce?

For merchants whose customers already use ChatGPT, ACP is quickly becoming a real sales channel, not a novelty. It also introduces a new dynamic: ChatGPT has visibility into parts of the order process, and fulfillment quality may eventually affect how products are surfaced. Brands that skip this risk being left out of a fast-growing slice of AI-assisted shopping.

What should my brand do about ACP?

Check whether your customers are already shopping through ChatGPT, and if so, prepare structured product feeds and submit your business information to OpenAI. Feed requirements here are still evolving, which is why brands will want to automate this process instead of managing it SKU by SKU.
